OK
I have 4 yards of satin
And 3 yards of red spider webby gauzy stuff
And 2 yards of black spider webby with bats really gauzy stuff
And the above pattern which is a size 6-12 womens (click the post title)
And a daughter who is a size 12 in girls
And thread
And I am ready to just lay the satin down on the floor, draw my daughter's outline, cut, sew, and be done with it.
I don't think that would turn out too well.
We have to alter the pattern because we don't want our dress to have a tie/corset feel. We also don't want a spiky hem. And we want a rounded neckline. And we don't need darts at the bustline. But I totally couldn't find a pattern that was everything we wanted.
I would absolutely love to be able to make my own patterns. I know what I want to do but I don't know how to do it. I am going to do some internet research.
I'll keep you updated. Don't fall off the edge of your seat.
For Halloween costume patterns, I'll often cheat and start out with a clothing item similar to that of the desired outcome, take it apart, and trace it onto a large sheet of paper (making sure to leave about a half an inch from the edge where I'll be cutting to the line where I'll be sewing). I usually get my take-apart-clothing-item from a garage sale for about 10 cents. It is also a great way to use up some of that oversize drawing paper that always seem to be stuffed into a craft closet corner. When I'm done, I make any necessary modifications to the pattern, jot down some simple instructions, and store it in an envelope for future use. Hope that helps for any future DIY costume endeavors!
